A slightly more subtle transformation with this model. The Proto2000 GP18 filled a large gap in the modellers' wants list when it was produced. A mechanically sound design the only real draw back from the 'scale' modellers' viewpoint was the inclusion of the working cab sunshades. Grossly overscale mechanism removed one is left with two large holes in the roof! A lot of filler and the paint touched up gives you the finish that you see - the flash in the photograph has, rather cruelly, highlighted the blemish that I hadn't noticed in the flesh. They do say that the camera doesn't lie!

The model started life as a decorated NKP model which I was quite happy to allow to remain as such. A few things were changed (the fans were replaced with Detail Associates / Train Station Products manufacture - I don't remember what was wrong with the Lifelike version now) and the horns, bell and additional lighting appropriate to the Nickel Plate added.

The paintwork was touched up in the few places that it was needed - quite an easy task when it is mostly black - and the model was nearly ready. The last little touch was with the handrails. The moulded Lifelike offerings are very good but, as provided with the model, are all yellow and do tend to 'throb' a bit. I looked through my photographic records and found out that the GP18s were delivered with all yellow handrails but within a short time the uprights were painted black. Photos were checked, the paint and a small brush came out and the 'glowing' yellow handrails took on a much better look. It is surprising how a small touch like this can make all the difference to a model.
